Food for Fitness Tip #6: EAT MORE WHOLE GRAINS

Food for Fitness Tip #6: EAT MORE WHOLE GRAINS

More and more people are shunning grains in their diet right now, exploring paleo and going gluten free as a healthier eating choice.

Whilst eating a diet high in refined grains and processed foods has been linked to health problems like obesity and inflammation, eating more whole grains will actually make your diet healthier.

What Are Whole Grains?

Whole grains contain all three parts of the grain (the ‘whole’ grain). Oats, popcorn, brown rice, wild rice, rye, barley, bulgur wheat, quinoa and whole grain flour are examples of whole grain that are readily available and easy to prepare and eat in meals.

What Makes Whole Grains Special?

Whole grains are packed with nutrients including protein, fibre, B vitamins, iron, zinc, copper and magnesium, nutrients essential for good health.

What are the Health Benefits?

Whole grains deliver a variety of health benefits. Regularly eating whole grains may reduce your risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and obesity.

Whole grains can also improve your digestive health, by helping to maintain regular bowel movements and promoting the growth of healthy bacteria in your gut.
